  • JVO Exec Ed Conducted a Successful Executive Leadership Program in ARMM

    The Executive Education Program of the Ateneo School of Government, in partnership with the Local Government Support Program in the ARMM (LGSPA), conducted last 17-20 January 2008 the Executive and Legislative Leadership Development Training Course for LGU officials in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. The training was held at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City.

    Thirty-five (35) local chief executives and vice-chief executives, including the provincial governors of Basilan and Tawi-Tawi, attended the four-day course.

    The training is part of LGSPA's capacity development program which aims to enhance leadership and development planning and management skills among ARMM LGU leaders.

    ASoG Executive Education Program Director Ms. Aurma Manlangit welcomed the participants on opening day and gave an overview of the whole training course.

    ASoG Dean Tony La Viña gave a lecture on Consensus Building for Peace and Development at the start of the second day. Emphasizing the importance of principled negotiation in coming to any form of consensus about local governance issues, Dean La Viña explained the mutual gains approach to negotiation and how this can be applied in broadening support for peace and local development efforts in the ARMM.

    The LGSPA training course provided an opportunity for the ASoG to present and discuss its framework for ethical leadership to ARMM LGU officials. Dr. Angelita Gregorio-Medel talked on Public Leadership and Good Governance, discussing leadership concepts and principles, the basis of power in leadership, and the core leadership competencies. Dr. Gregorio-Medel later guided the participants through an individual learning exercise on mind-mapping as a tool for reflection and effective decision-making.

    Other ASoG faculty members who provided inputs and shared experiences during the Davao training were former Civil Service chairperson Corazon Alma de Leon, Mayors Mary Jane Ortega and Jessie Robredo, and Dr. Rufo Mendoza.
