Study on the Economic Development of Selected Cities in Mindanao

City Information Baseline

City of Malaybalay

I.                     City Economic/ Investment Information Baseline

a.      Number of establishments by type of business

Based on the data provided by the Department of Trade and Industry – Bukidnon Office, the predominant activity is trading closely followed by services. This is just for the businesses that applied for business name, thus, some businesses that applied with the SEC and those that did not apply for business name are not included. Manufacturing and Production account for only 10% of the total number of businesses. The Services and Trading Sectors account for the remaining 90%.

b.      Number of establishments by classification (micro, small, medium, large)

Of the establishments registering their business names with the DTI – Bukidnon, the Micro-business sector dominated with almost 98%. There was no large business registered for Malaybalay. This shows that the economy of the city is mainly by entrepreneurs investing with capitalization of below P3,000.000. The DTI data does not tally with the BPLO data probably because not all the businesses registering with the city have registered with the DTI.

c.      Number of establishments by capitalization

Based on the data provided by the BPLO, the picture is even clearer that the dominant business investment is by Barangay Micro enterprises (with capitalization of below P50,000). For the past three years, about 90% of the new businesses registered have capitalization of P50,000 and below. This means that even if there are many new businesses being added yearly, these do not contribute much to the investment figures. Also, these types of businesses are more prone to falling out as they do not have sufficient capital to weather lean periods of business.
